Reviews

"The first Audio Doughnuts offering of 2014 is set for March 31, a four-track Will Ward EP consisting of two originals and remixes by Hodge and Filter Dread.

As well as Ward's involvement in electronica trio Circle Traps, he has turned out club-focused, solo material for both Deadplate and Sine of the Times. For his debut AD release, the boundaries of house, garage and techno are once again blurred, with a clear emphasis on low-end pressure and subtlety. Opener '224' is ominous and distinctly UK. It's driven along by bass compression and shifting hi-hats, making it readily equipped for dance-floor tension. 'Pavilion' is faster and more arresting, but once again centered on sub-weight and geared for systems. Fans of Untold, Midland or Beneath take note.

Livity Sound and Punch Drunk man Hodge is no stranger to rolling, bass-heavy techno and a prime candidate to remix '224'. His version echoes the synth-work, and fits sandpaper percussion into the mid-range, using the whole stereo field to hypnotic effect. Taking on 'Pavilion', Filter Dread ploughs the fertile ground between techno and instrumental grime with tight 909 action, drum rolls and bleeps of a two-note melody. These two broken-beat mixes complement the straighter originals and round off a package that lends itself to a wide range of DJs and fans alike."
